Join the Mulberry Street Library in welcoming artist Jahyun Seo, whose artwork will be on display from Monday, September 18 through Tuesday, December 26.

From the artist’s bio: “Jahyun Seo's art explores the theme of "seeing and being seen" within the context of modern society's media image. Seo's work balances on the boundary between traditional painting and digital media, examining how truth is transformed and distorted through media. Seo aims to expand the audience's perception of this theme in three stages by presenting original paintings, digitally altered images that are unrecognizable, and a combination of originals, digital images, and copies in a real exhibition space. Alongside these works, Seo incorporates messages focusing on political, social, economic, and religious themes from a Christian perspective. These messages are layered on top of each other to create a complex and multifaceted experience for the viewer.

The theme of these pieces is "Prayer Time”. After the pandemic hit the world, the whole world seems to stand still for a moment, and amidst the various traces of grief, pain, confusion, anxiety, and loss that have been left in its wake, we are talking about the power of love, which is at the core of the journey towards recovery. In the hustle and bustle of the modern world, people are constantly pursuing their dreams and goals, and sometimes they lose sight of everything around them, especially precious relationships and the love within them. This is considered the most painful loss in our lives. However, the unexpected break brought by the pandemic has allowed many people to revisit the precious moments spent with their families, and as a result, many families have experienced special moments of reconciliation, further strengthening their bonds. The digital works in this exhibition remind us of the power of selfless love that we need in times of suspended animation. In the complex structure of modern civilization, a lack of communication can sometimes escalate small misunderstandings into major conflicts, but a quick smile or a simple text message can brighten someone's day with a moment of love.”
