Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture

Tour Information

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library is generally recognized as the world’s leading research library devoted exclusively to documenting the history and cultural development of peoples of African descent worldwide. From its founding in 1925 during the Harlem Renaissance, the Center has amassed vast collections of over 10 million items. Resource materials are organized by format into five distinct divisions: General Research and Reference; Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books; Photographs and Prints; Moving Image and Recorded Sound; and Art and Artifacts. A cultural center as well as a repository, the Schomburg Center also sponsors a wide array of interpretive programs, including exhibitions, scholarly and public forums and cultural performances.

We welcome individuals, schools, organizations, or companies to tour the facility and exhibition hall.

Exhibition Hours

Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission

Admission is FREE for the exhibitions at the Schomburg; however, DONATIONS ARE WELCOMED.

Guided Tours

Guided Tours are available from Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  Reservations are by appointment only. For reservations, please complete Tour Request Form. Please fax or email the completed form to 212-491-2011 or email schomburgtours@nypl.org

Guided Tours must be scheduled a minimum of 4 weeks in advance.

Guided tours are limited to 30 people per group.  Scheduled tours usually are 30 to 60 minutes depending on the exhibition content.

Please remember if you are more than 30 minutes late for a scheduled tour there is no guarantee your tour will be guided. 

Self-Guided Tours

Self-Guided Tours are available from Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 PM. We recommend all groups consisting of 10 or more people visiting the Schomburg Center schedule a self-guided tour to prevent conflicts with other large groups.  For reservations, please complete the Tour Request Form (in PDF).  Please fax or email the completed from to 212-491-2011 or schomburgtours@nypl.org

Audio Guide

Audio tours are available upon request for specific exhibitions, during the day/time of exhibit.

Confirmation

If your tour has been confirmed, you will receive a confirmation form within 48 hours (business days).  Please present your confirmation form at the security desk when you arrive at the Schomburg Center.
