Checkroom Service and Policy

The Humanities and Social Sciences Library provides two supervised, no-fee checkrooms as a service to readers and visitors. One is located on the first floor opposite the Library Shop near the Fifth Avenue entrance. The other is located at the 42nd Street entrance.

The items listed below must be checked upon entering the Library:

  • All bags, containers, and parcels larger than 11 x 14 inches
  • Wheeled conveyances, including strollers
  • Outdoor wear, including coats

Luggage of any size is not permitted in the Library, and the checkroom will not accept such items.

Only the following research-related items will be allowed in reading rooms:

  • Briefcases or bookbags no larger than 11 x 14 inches containing personal books, other reading or writing materials, and laptops

Clear plastic bags are provided for carrying personal ítems.

Additional restrictions apply in some of the Special Collections' reading rooms where a card of admission is required for access. Contact that Special Collection Library division directly for more information.

Checked materials must be picked up no later than ten minutes before closing. The Library is not responsible for items left overnight.

Library visitors must submit all books, bags, briefcases, and other containers for inspection when exiting the building, including those that were checked during your visit.
