Duplication of Materials

Regulations

All photoduplication is carried out by New York Public Library staff.  Photography in the Brooke Russell Astor Reading Room is not permitted.

The Rare Books Division staff will determine whether material will be reproduced and the means of reproduction. Additionally, The New York Public Library reserves the right to prohibit the reproduction of any item that may be damaged by any copying process.

Photocopying of Rare Books Division materials is not permitted.

Photographic Services

The Library’s Office of Photographic Services & Permissions offers a range of photoduplication options, including digital images, 35mm prints and slides, 4x5 transparencies, and microfilm.  Staff in this office can assist readers with questions related to photographic duplication options and pricing.

On-site readers should indicate to Rare Books staff any item(s) that they wish to have duplicated.  Forms for requesting photoduplications are available in the Rare Books reading room, as well as on the Photographic Services & Permissions website.  On-site requests may also be submitted directly in the Photographic Services & Permissions office, Room 103.

Requests for photoduplications can also be made by e-mail, mail, or telephone.  All such requests should be directed to the Office of Photographic Services & Permissions.  When placing your order, please provide the following information for each desired image: call number(s), title(s), author(s), and page and/or plate number(s).  If this information cannot be provided, fulfillment of the order may be delayed.

When locating requested item(s) requires extensive research, readers will be referred to NYPL Express (the Library’s fee-based research service) or be asked to engage a qualified agent to conduct the research on their behalf.

Permission to publish or quote from any material from the collections must be obtained from the Office of Special Collections. Permissions requests must include a complete citation for each work to be quoted, including call number, author, title, publication information, and page numbers. Permission to publish images or complete texts should be requested from Photographic Services & Permissions.
