The New York Public Library's Books for the Teen Age 2006 Guides Teens to Great Reads

Book List Selected by Young Adult Librarians Highlights Titles on Diverse Topics

Books for the Teen Age 2006, the ultimate guide to teen reads, is now available from The New York Public Library. With over 1,100 titles selected by a team of young adult librarians and experts on teen literature, this list offers books that cover the fears, joys, and angst of the teen years in voices to which teens can relate. In many of the recommended works readers will see life through the eyes of their peers. They will grieve with 16-year-old Miles Halter over his love and loss in Looking For Alaska by John Green and follow 13-year-old Ma Yan through her struggles to get an education despite crippling poverty in the drought-scarred province of Ningxia, China in the autobiographical work, The Diary of Ma Yan.

Aside from the invaluable content, Books for the Teen Age 2006 is a treasure unto itself. Each year The New York Public Library sponsors a citywide competition to design the publication's cover and this year's design, featuring New York City teens, was created by 10th grader Darryl Davis from Samuel Gompers Career and Technical Education High School in the Bronx.

Books for the Teen Age 2006 is divided into five main sections: The Creative Spirit; Science; Here and Now; One World; and Action and Adventure; which are then divided into subcategories such as humor, science fiction, manga, poetry, music, biographies, and historical fiction. New titles such as Smartbomb, an insider's look at the gaming world, and Sitcom Style, a look inside America's favorite television homes, are denoted with an asterisk.

For the first time, in this the 77th edition of Books for the Teen Age 2006, the book list also includes a Memoir section with titles like Teacher Man by Frank McCourt and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Each double-page spread incorporates one or two sidebars containing jacket blurbs or direct quotes from texts to heighten interest in some of the top-notch books included in the list. The recommended books are available throughout The New York Public Library's branches, and many of them are available in Braille, recorded, or large-print format at the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library.
