Miss Manners (a.k.a. Judith Martin) to Speak at The New York Public Library, Tuesday May 10th at 7:00 p.m.

Judith Martin discusses modern etiquette with New York Times Sunday Styles writer Bob Morris, for an event called "Let's Put Manners on You"

April 27, 2005, New York, N.Y. - Your neighbor denounces cellular telephones as instruments of the devil. Your niece swears no one expects thank-you letters anymore. Your father-in-law insists that married women have to take their husbands' names. Your guests plead that asking them to commit to attending your party ruins the spontaneity. To whom can you turn for answers to life's complicated questions? To Miss Manners, of course.

LIVE from the NYPL, The New York Public Library's ongoing series of public programs, will present an evening with Miss Manners (a.k.a. Judith Martin), in conversation with New York Times Sunday Styles writer Bob Morris, on Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m. The discussion will be held in the South Court Auditorium at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling (212) 868-4444, or by visiting www.smarttix.com.

Judith Martin's classic etiquette guide, first published in 1982, has been the last word in manners for almost twenty-five years. Now, Miss Manners has completely revised and updated her classic guide, "Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior" (W.W. Norton) and for the first time addresses the spectrum of changes that have swept through American society.

"To call Miss Manners the successor of Emily Post is to confuse two kinds of work," says cultural historian Jacques Barzun. "Both writers rank at the top, but Emily Post was an editor-compiler; Miss Manners is a social thinker and a stylist besides. Her writings give pleasure, food for thought, and instruction even to those reasonably satisfied with their own manners."
