Dance Lectures by Arshiya Sethi and Alma Guillermoprieto; and Screenings of Two Seldom-Seen Films Starring John Gielgud Among Highlights

New York, NY, March 25, 2004 -- Free public programs of music, theater, film, and dance are offered in April 2004 at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, 40 Lincoln Center Plaza. All programs are held in the Library's Bruno Walter Auditorium. Admission is free and seats are available on a first-come basis. Sattriya: The Classical Dance of Assam. A lecture by Arshiya Sethi that will feature video examples of the dance of Assam, a state in the northeast of India.

Saturday, April 10, 3:00 p.m.
Paul Sperry, Tenor. The 70th Birthday Concert by the distinguished tenor. The program will include Poulenc's Parisiana (both songs) and Le Disparu; the composer's manuscripts for these works are housed in the Library's Music Division. Part of the Treasures of the Music Division series.

A Tribute to Sir John Gielgud in Song, Sonnet and Story. Steve Ross will emcee a program focusing on songs from a few of Sir John's favorite musicals (Chu Chin Chow, Showboat); songs by Ivor Novello; and reminiscences and readings by friends of Sir John Gielgud, including Paula Laurence, Eli Wallach, and Anne Jackson.  Part of the Ages of a Man: A Centennial Tribute to Sir John Gielgud series.

Thursday, April 22, 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday, April 24, 2:30 p.m.
Gielgud on Screen: Chekhov and Shakespeare. Swan Song (1992, 23 minutes), an Academy Award- nominated short based on a play by Anton Chekhov and directed by Kenneth Branagh, will be followed by Prospero's Books (1991,124 minutes), directed by Peter Greenaway and based on The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Part of the Ages of a Man: A Centennial Tribute to Sir John Gielgud series.
