The New York Public Library Appoints Jean Strouse, J.P.
Morgan Biographer, as Director of Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for
Scholars and Writers
“Jean Strouse is going to bring the great intellectual vigor and personal dynamism to the role of Weinberg Director that she brings to every aspect of her life and work, said Dr. LeClerc. “We are absolutely delighted that she has agreed to come on board as the director of the Cullman Center as we welcome our fifth class of Fellows. The program has evolved into a significant intellectual forum in the life of New York, and Jean is precisely the right person to lead the Center at this stage of its development. Jean Strouse is the author of Morgan, American Financier (1999) and Alice James, A Biography (1980), which won the Bancroft Prize in American History and Diplomacy. Her essays and reviews in have appeared in many publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, Newsweek, and The Washington Post. She has recently served as President of the Society of American Historians (2001-2002) and as a consultant (oral historian) to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (2000-2002), and she is a Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. “I see this job as an exciting double opportunity -- to work with Fellows who are using the Librarys fantastic collections, and to create public conversations around their projects, making the Cullman Center a vital part of New Yorks intellectual and cultural life, said Ms. Strouse. “It was tremendously generous of Dorothy and Lewis Cullman to endow the program at the outset, and I very much look forward to working with Paul LeClerc, the Centers Executive and Selection Committees, and the Library staff. The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers offers a nine-month fellowship that allows researchers and creative writers to work at the Library on projects involving use of its collections. Fellows receive a stipend and office space, and are encouraged to share ideas. The Center is known as an active hub of intellectual discourse, particularly through its public lecture series presented by fellows in the fall and spring. In addition, writings by fellows routinely appear in local and national publications during their tenure. The Cullman Center was inaugurated in the fall of 1999. Peter Gay, the Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University, was appointed in 1997, serving as its director during the planning stages and during its first four classes. A prolific author, distinguished professor, and respected scholar, Mr. Gay put his distinctive imprint on the Center, presiding over four classes of fellows between 1999 and the present. Many of the 60 appointed so far credit the program with giving new direction to their work, and in some cases to their lives. “At the outset of this experiment six years ago, the dream of our leadership donors, Dorothy and Lewis Cullman, was to make the Library at Fifth Avenue a focal point for writers and thinkers in New York City by creating a forum for scholarly discourse, said Library President Paul LeClerc. “Under the leadership of Peter Gay, the dream became a reality. We now look forward to supporting Jean Strouses leadership in this new phase of the Cullman Centers growth. The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers was made possible by a generous endowment from Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman in honor of Brooke Russell Astor, with major support provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Estate of Charles J. Liebman, Sue Ann and John Weinberg, The Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation, William W. Karatz, and additional gifts from Mel and Lois Tukman, Margaret and Herman Sokol, Sandra Payson, and the Elizabeth C. Rivers Lewine Charitable Trust. ### Contact: Caroline Oyama (coyama@nypl.org)
