Database Spotlights

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals offers a comprehensive listing of journal articles published worldwide on architecture and design, archaeology, city planning, interior design, and historic preservation. Avery indexes not only the international scholarly and popular periodical literature, but also the publications of professional associations, US state and regional periodicals, and the major serial publications on architecture and design of Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Australia. Expanded coverage includes obituary citations providing an excellent source of biographical data — often the only information available for less-published architects. Coverage is from the 1930s (with selective coverage dating back to the 1860s) to the present.

Black Studies Center
Black Studies Center brings together essential historical and current material for researching the past, present and future of African-Americans, the wider African Diaspora, and Africa itself. It is comprised of several cross-searchable component databases: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals, The Chicago Defender (1910-1975), ProQuest Dissertations for Black Studies (1970-2004), and Black Literature Index (1827-1940).

House of Commons Parliamentary Papers
The House of Commons Parliamentary Papers online provides searchable full text (currently, 1801-1978, 2004-2006, remaining papers for 1979-2003 scheduled to be completed spring 2007) and detailed subject indexing (1801-2006) for this historical record of Britain, its former Colonies and the wider world. They are among the richest and most detailed primary sources for the history of the past two centuries, and are fundamental to an understanding of current legislation, policy making and the political environment.

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

Picture this! A snapshot of photo collections in the Billy Rose Theatre Collection

Among the treasures of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts are photographic collections documenting theatre and film performances throughout the twentieth century and up to the present day. The photos, which number in the millions, are in demand by writers, photo researchers, film studios, and television producers.

The Kenn Duncan Photograph Archive: Duncan was one of the foremost dance photographers of the late twentieth century, and his archive of over 600,000 items spans the whole of his career. Images in both black and white and color document stars of the dance, theatre, and film worlds, including Angela Lansbury, Marcel Marceau, Bette Midler, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev, and nearly every principal dance company in the world. There are also numerous photographs of nudes, both male and female. A major exhibition devoted to Duncan’s work will be mounted by the Library in 2008!

The White Studio Collection: Encompassing theater, vaudeville, operetta, and dance performances from the earliest days of the 20th century into the 1930s, White Studio photos include images from the Ziegfeld Follies, Show Boat, Gershwin musicals, early works by Eugene O’Neill and Noel Coward, and long forgotten but vividly captured vaudeville performances.

The Vandamm Studio Collection: More than one thousand New York stage productions are documented from the early 1920s through 1960. Great stage stars like Ethel Merman, Henry Fonda, Fred Astaire, Lunt and Fontanne, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, and many others are captured in the high contrast, black-and-white Vandamm images.

The Friedman-Abeles Collection: The stars of the New York theatre from the late 1950s through the 1970s, such as Carol Channing, Zero Mostel, Gwen Verdon, and Richard Burton, are highlighted in this collection which features many color photos and candid shots of opening nights.

Avery Willard Photographs: A former actor, Willard’s work includes portraits of many famous actors, musicians, and dancers, as well as photographs of theatrical productions both on and off Broadway. Many of his photographs appeared in the theater annual, Theater World. Among the celebrated faces found in this collection are Leonard Bernstein, Pablo Casals, Montgomery Clift, Lillian Gish, Charlton Heston, Jayne Mansfield, Mabel Mercer, Paul Newman, and Ted Shawn.
