Renaming of Humanities and Social Sciences Library
Stephen A. Schwarzman, Library Trustee and Chairman, CEO
and co-founder of The Blackstone Group, has pledged $100 million
to the Library. It is the largest unrestricted donation ever
made to a New York City cultural institution. It is also by
far the largest single donation in the Library’s history.
In recognition of this exceptional gift, the Library's Board
of Trustees has resolved that the Fifth Avenue building—currently
known as the Humanities and Social Sciences Library—shall
be renamed the "Stephen A. Schwarzman Building."

Since its beginning, The New York Public Library has been
an information portal for the businesses of this international
trading city. The Library subscribes to professional magazines
and periodicals from all over the world, some of them going
back for over a hundred years. Particularly useful for businesses
are the so-called 'trade' or industry magazines, written for
readers in business, engineering and technology fields.
The German engineer Karl Culman (1821-1881) visited America twice in his life, taking in the Erie Canal and railway bridges. He published an article on the building of wooden railway bridges in North America in 1851, in the magazine Allgemeine Bauzeitung. Culman went on to publish one of the most important early textbooks on the theory of structural engineering. Both the magazine article and his later book are in the SIBL collection (and both in their original German).
American engineering of wood and steel bridges was the most
advanced in the world in the 19th century, partly because
of the expansion of the railways and partly because of American
engineers' willingness to innovate and experiment empirically
with new materials and construction techniques. The Library's
collection includes early copies of a 19th century 'newspaper'
of civil engineering, the Zeitschrift für Bauwesen,
published in Berlin. More like a magazine or a technical journal
this specialist newspaper was published weekly or monthly
rather than daily, and documents the early history of structural
engineering both in Europe and the United States. Copies of
Bauwesen are now extremely hard to find in Europe.
German libraries that originally owned the publication were
bombed during World War II and many holdings are presumed
lost.
Since New York's beginning as an international port, transportation
has been crucial to the city’s economy. Titles such as Tramways
& Urban Transit, and Tunnels & Tunneling International,
both published in English in the United Kingdom but international
in scope seem very timely with New York City looking to renew
and even expand its transportation infrastructure. The United
States auto industry, looking to reinvent itself, might like
to check out what European car manufacturers, facing more
expensive fuel costs, have been doing, through the pages of
Auto-Zeitung, published in Cologne, a city known for
its car factories. This consumer-oriented publication is in
German, but the new-year model designs and marketing strategies
are very visual content.
Perfumes and cosmetics are big business in New York, but international, too. How better to keep up to date with the global industry than to peruse the pages of Parfums Cosmétiques Actualités a news magazine published bi-monthly in Paris.
