Computer Page Profiles: Success Stories
Andre, a senior at Cardinal Hayes High School,
has established a good name for himself at the Countee Cullen
Branch Library. In
his one-and-a-half year tenure as a Computer Page, Andre has served
over 500 adults and children. Patrons specifically return to see
Andre because of his pleasant personality, teaching skills and
computer expertise. Many of the hundreds of patrons Andre has
worked with to complete resumes and job-related work, have received
job offers from organizations they researched at Countee Cullen
Branch Library. Andre has cultivated his technical skills and
deepened his appreciation for computers to such an extent that
he plans to attend college and major in Computer Science.

A senior at Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem,
Jamal appreciates the educational opportunity of being
a Computer Page at the 125th Street Branch Library and is glad
to have a job that promotes his personal and professional development.
Working as a Computer Page, Jamal uses computers on a daily basis,
and gains valuable experience and skills. Jamal then empowers
the public with his skills by helping the computer illiterate
become literate. Upon graduation from high school, Jamal will
attend Pennsylvania State University where he plans to major in
Computer Information Systems.

A senior at Wadleigh Secondary School, Angela has worked
as a Computer Page at the 115th Street Branch Library in the adult
division.
She particularly enjoys working with older patrons, individuals
who are not yet experienced or comfortable with computers, a favorite
aspect of her job. As a Computer Page, Angela has learned to work
effectively with the public, to troubleshoot computer problems
and to better manage her time -- skills that may be used when
she pursues psychology in college.

Recently promoted from Computer Page at the 125th
Street Branch Library to Library Clerk at the Aguilar Branch Library,
Jose demonstrates that the Computer Page Program provides
individuals with the opportunity to advance themselves as they
contribute to the growth and welfare of their community. Reflecting
on his one-year Computer Page experience, Jose describes his favorite
aspects of the job: helping patrons with problems on the Internet
and on the Macintosh Computer. Jose witnessed patrons' skills
and confidence grow when manipulating the computers and printers,
due in part to his assistance. In addition, Jose maintained user
statistics to produce monthly reports that enabled Library officials
to assess computer demand. Jose is a freshman at Interborough
Institute and plans to major in Computer Information Systems.
