Association Montessori Internationale (AMI)

The School Volunteer Program is the leading citizens' organization providing tutoring and instructional enrichment to students in the New York City public schools.

Parent Guide News provides a directory of Manhattan nursery, preschools, and private schools. Although this directory is not complete, there are links to many organization web sites (when available) or to information about the organization including address, director, class size, and curriculum.

Adult Literacy

Literacy Assistance Center
Founded in 1983, the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) is a not-for-profit organization that provides essential referral, training, information and technical assistance services to hundreds of adult and youth literacy programs in New York.

The New York Public Library Branch Libraries
The Branch Libraries provide a wide array of study manuals for the High School Equivalency Diploma exam in their Reference and Circulating collections. In addition, videos from the KET/GED television series are available for in-house viewing at the Donnell Media Center.

The New York Public Library Centers for Reading and Writing
The New York Public Library's literacy program, the Centers for Reading and Writing (CRW), offers free tutoring in reading and writing to English-speaking adults, 16 years of age and older, through small group instruction. Centers located in Manhattan including the Harlem, St. Agnes and Seward Park Branches. Please call to verify program times and service hours.

Donnell Library Center - Nathan Straus Young Adult Center
The Learn Your Way Center for Teenagers (LYWCT) is a Learner's Advisory Service specifically geared towards the young adult. The LYWCT provides information on college admissions, financial aid, alternatives to school, high school equivalency preparation, careers, recreational and leisure-time activities for those aged 12-21. Staff is available to speak to groups about educational resources and career information for young adults and be contacted at (212) 621-0633.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

The New York Public Library, Community Outreach Services - ESOL Classes
Free classes in English for speakers of other languages are offered at branches of The New York Public Library in association with the Riverside Language Program, Inc. Classes in Manhattan are held three times a year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) and are for beginner and intermediate levels only.
