About the Collection

The Health Information Center has the largest collection of health materials at the New York Public Library. It contains 22,000 circulating and reference books as well as videos with 200 periodicals and indexes.

Test Collection

Medical Licensure Examination questions, test preparation guides and reviews for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals are available for circulation.

Workshops

The Center conducts a regular Health on the Internet workshop. Learn to search for physicians' credentials, information on diseases / disorders, medication, nutrition, and fitness. This class is taught by the librarians of the Health Information Center. Pre-register online 2 weeks prior to the class, or in person on the 4th floor of the Mid-Manhattan Library.

Other Services

A document delivery service for health and medical journal articles for personal use only is available. (Limited to 10 articles; $1.00 each; the fee is non-refundable). Requests should be made at the Information Desk.

  • Alt HealthWatch EBSCO
    Focus on complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.
  • AMA Physician Select
    Provides information on virtually every licensed physician in the United States and its possessions, including doctors of medicine (MD) and doctors of osteopathy or osteopathic medicine (DO).
  • Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module
    A comprehensive resource that provides integrated access to medical, health, and wellness information through an intuitive Web interface. Included in the database are full-text magazines, journals, pamphlets from a wide variety of medical sources as well as "Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine".
  • Health Source: Consumer Edition EBSCO
    Full text for journals including Consumer Reports on Health and Men's Health, as well as abstracts and indexing for general health, nutrition and professional health care publications.
  • Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition EBSCO
    Includes scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines.
  • MEDLINEplus
    Allows users to search about specific conditions using dictionaries, MEDLINE, PUBMED and other resources.
  • NOAH (New York Online Access to Health)
    A guide to the latest health information and resources.
