The Central Libraries

When you need to find in-depth information on a particular topic turn to the four units of the Central Library:

Located in central Manhattan, all five can be reached easily by bus and subway.

These collections are among the finest and more extensive in New York City and the United States -- and they're free to anyone with a New York Public Library card.

Find help with career planning, job hunting, research consumer health information, or navigate the World Wide Web. Those who have visual, hearing or mobility impairments can receive help in using library resources, and all of these libraries are fully accessible to wheelchairs.

Events and Exhibitions

Each year, thousands of free programs and exhibitions are held in the Central Library units. We offer something for everyone: from children's puppet shows to orchestral performances, book groups, computer classes, and seminars. Program listings are published monthly in Events for Adults and Young Adults, and Events for Children, the free calendars available at all branch libraries. Or you can browse events in our online calendar.

Reference Services by Telephone and Online

Can't find the answer? The Telephone Reference Service provides fast research and answers to your questions. Our skilled staff can find facts on everything from biography, history, and grammar to sports, entertainment, and food - but research time is limited to five minutes per call. You can reach Telephone Reference at 212.340.0830. The librarians of Telephone Reference Department are available answer questions online.

Online Resources

All of the Central Libraries have PCs to connect you to the World Wide Web. The Science, Industry and Business Library offers laptock docking, giving users the opportunity to connect laptop computers to the Internet and to connect to many of the electronic information resources available at SIBL. The Library's databases provide access newspapers and magazines, health resources, and books and literature.

Search NYPL's online catalogs, circulating and non-circulating, place items on reserve, renew checked out items, and review your circulation record.
